Windows SmartScreen will warn you about an unrecognised app until the installer is code-signed. Choose More info → Run anyway, or wait for the signed release.

What is coming, and what it changes

macOS In development

The same app, for Apple silicon and Intel Macs, signed and notarised so it opens without Gatekeeper complaining. Everything works the way it does on Windows — same console, same tuner, same keys on the dance floor, same guest page. Drag the player window onto a TV over HDMI or AirPlay and you are away.

Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV In development

This is the one worth waiting for if you are tired of dedicating a laptop to the party. Kuthu lives on the streaming stick or box already plugged into the television. Your phone becomes the console — find songs, build the set, approve requests — and every guest's phone works exactly as it does today. Nothing to plug in, nothing to drag onto a second screen, and no laptop sitting open in the corner for five hours.

One licence, every platform. Buying Kuthu buys the app, not a copy of it for one kind of machine. When the Mac and TV builds land, they are yours.

Ads, and how to get rid of them

Kuthu plays videos from YouTube exactly as YouTube serves them, which means ads play — and that is how the composers, singers and labels get paid for a song you did not buy. Kuthu never skips, blocks or hides one. What it does is hold the segment clock still while an ad runs, so your song still gets its full chorus afterwards instead of losing thirty seconds to an ad that ate them.

If ads are spoiling your parties, get YouTube Premium. Sign the player into a Premium account and there are no ads at all — nothing interrupts a set, the segment timing is exact, and each play pays the rights holders at the subscription rate instead of the ad rate. It is a bigger improvement to how a night flows than anything we could build into the app, and it means Kuthu's ad handling never has to do anything.

What you need first

Windows 10 / 11 What ships today. Mac and TV builds are in development.
Python 3.9+ Runs the engine. During install, tick “Add python.exe to PATH” — skipping that box is the single most common setup problem.
Node.js Runs the player window. Any current LTS version is fine.
~8 Mbps What 1080p video wants on the night. Wired is better than WiFi.
A TV or projector Anything your laptop can treat as a second screen. You drag the player window onto it.
You do not need a YouTube API key to run your first party. Paste in links by hand and Kuthu reads the title and channel straight from YouTube. A free key only adds the features that need to search — automatic discovery, playlist import, and hunting down a replacement when a video dies.

Setting it up

  1. Unzip the folder somewhere permanent, such as C:\Kuthu.
  2. Double-click setup.bat. It creates a virtual environment and installs what the engine needs. One time only.
  3. Double-click run.bat. That starts Kuthu. The first run also fetches the player runtime, which takes a few minutes and about 250 MB; every run after that opens straight away.
  4. Press Ctrl+K inside the app for the console, where you find songs and build a set.
  5. Windows will ask to allow Kuthu through the firewall. Say yes for private networks — that is what lets your guests' phones reach it.

From there, the documentation walks through building a collection, tuning the segments and running the night.
